It is advisable to have the brake system checked by a specialist, for example when changing the wheels.

Brake pads should be replaced when the remaining lining is less than two millimeters, drum brake shoes at one millimeter at the latest.

There are wear indicators on disc brake pads in almost all cars today. These can work electrically and illuminate a light in the dashboard or mechanically, where a metal pin scratches the window when the wear limit is reached.

When you brake, you hear an unpleasant noise, which is the ultimate invitation to visit the workshop.

The lifespan of pads cannot be determined by mileage, but rather by driving style and stress.

If you drive normally, you can expect the brake pads to last between 100,000 and 130,000 kilometers.

Detecting worn brake pads:

A persistent rubbing or grinding noise may indicate a worn component.

If the vehicle pulls slightly to the side or there is a slight shaking of the steering wheel or brake pedal, these are also signs of wear.

Other indications of worn or defective components include a fluttering or pulsating brake pedal, a low brake fluid level or an increasing braking distance.

The pistons in the brake calipers or the brake cylinders of the drum brakes can also wear out.

By the way: Work on the brake pads or brake discs should always be carried out by professionals! This is about your safety and the safety of all road users. Even small errors can lead to serious limitations in safety, and special tools are often required. Even though there are enough instructions on the Internet for experienced hobby mechanics, working on the brake system is a job for professionals!
